African Safaris

The right safari starts with what you want to see and how you want to spend your days. We help connect the wildlife areas, camps, guides and travel days into one considered trip.

Our point of view

A beautiful lodge is only part of the story. We start with the wildlife experience, then compare the camps that put you in the right place. Guiding, season, vehicle arrangements and the time lost moving between camps all belong in the conversation.

Our starting short list

These are starting points for a personal recommendation. We compare the specific property, ship or itinerary with your dates, priorities and budget.

For a highly supported safari

Micato Safaris

Micato offers scheduled small-group safaris and private custom journeys. We would put it on the list when you want an established touring framework or a private itinerary with substantial support around the logistics.

Before you choose: Compare private versus scheduled departures, the actual camps and the pace of travel.

For Zambia and Madagascar

Time + Tide

A useful starting point for travelers drawn to Zambia’s safari areas and Madagascar’s island experiences. The appeal is the setting and time outside; we would build the trip around the experiences you want, rather than collecting lodge names.

Before you choose: Check seasonal operations, walking opportunities and transfers for each camp.

For a lodge-led luxury safari

Singita

Singita’s lodges span several African wildlife destinations. We would compare specific properties when design, privacy and the lodge experience are major priorities alongside time with wildlife.

Before you choose: Choose the reserve and season first, then the room or private villa.

For a tailored safari conversation

Piper & Heath

A safari specialist already on our Short List. We consider this route when the trip needs individual attention to camp combinations and the connections between them.

Before you choose: Ask us to compare the full itinerary, guiding arrangements and support before deciding.

Where the trip could take you

South Africa + Cape Town

A useful starting conversation for a first safari with city time, food and landscapes. Compare the reserve experience and avoid spending half the trip changing hotels.

Kenya or Tanzania

Start with wildlife priorities and travel dates. Then decide whether a focused safari or a wider circuit gives you the experience you actually want.

Zambia or Botswana

Worth discussing when wilderness and the style of activity are the main draw. Water-based and walking experiences depend on the place, operator and season.

What we compare before recommending

01. What matters most: big cats, birding, walking, photography or a first overview?

02. Would you prefer a private vehicle, and what does the camp actually include?

03. Do each camp and region add something different to the itinerary?

04. How do small-aircraft luggage rules, transfer times and health requirements affect the route?

How to book with The Short List

1. Start with a conversation. Tell Hayden your dates, the number of travelers, a comfortable budget and any names already on your list.

2. Compare the right options. We narrow the choices, explain the differences and confirm the current price, terms and any available booking benefits.

3. Book with someone in your corner. We help coordinate the reservation and agreed trip details, and stay involved if requests or plans change.

For a trip with multiple moving parts, Private Planning begins at $300. We confirm the scope and any applicable fee before work begins. Already have a particular sailing or itinerary in mind? Send it over.

Booking benefits vary by supplier, departure, property, rate and availability. We confirm the details in your proposal.

A few useful answers

Can a safari work for a family?

Yes, but the camp’s age rules, room configuration, vehicle arrangements and daily rhythm need to fit your children. We check these at the property level.

Should I book the lodge before planning the rest?

Send us the lodge you love first. We can check whether it works with your dates, wildlife priorities and onward travel before you commit.
